Aside from basic text functionality, Notepad is a reliable repository for old-school programming languages like DOS or VBScript. But what it lacks in word-processing abilities, it makes up for as a minimalist scratchpad for basic coding. Notepad takes the concept of “no frills” to the extreme. If Microsoft Word is a “10” as a word processor, Notepad is around a “.000004” (give or take a few zeros). It’s an extremely minimalist text editor, and when I say minimalist, I mean minimalist. Microsoft Notepad has been included in every version of Windows going back to Windows 1.0 in 1985.
